The Scientific Art of Identity

PRESS STATEMENT
The Sensation Science Centre in Dundee and Dundee University are hosting a special project for schools on the subject of identity. It is funded by a Pulse award from the Wellcome Trust, an initiative which aims to develop new ways of exploring science and engaging young people with complex and often emotive scientific issues. It will enable international environmental artist Paul Goodrick and his team to work with children and teachers in the Dundee on the subject of who they are and what they look like, using a mix of art and science. A wider outcome is also planned so that schools across Scotland can benefit from a Teachers Pack and a framework for running in service training for teachers on the subject.

Paul lives in Kent and has already made inroads into this theme with schools as part of a Year of Science Award in 2002. He said, “The children will explore the many different things that gives them identity, with visual appearance being only a small part of it. They will also be looking very closely at DNA structures and how they can use these to do some unusual self-portrait sculptures”.

Research for the project and preliminary work for the schools will be starting soon. The programme and an exhibition at the Sensation Centre will take place at the end of the Project in March 2006.
