Kinder dreams in the Botanical Gardens

An exhibition of paintings and sculptures by international artist, Paul Goodrick, is on show at the Botanical Gardens until 4th June. The exhibits are based on Kinder Scout, the moorland plateau in the Peak District, famous for the mass trespass for the right to roam by walkers in 1932.

The art on show in the exhibition space in the Gatehouse on Clarkehouse Road is a small selection of the work Paul Goodrick has developed about the area over six years.

Paul Goodrick said: "The art I have created about Kinder Scout draws on the magical qualities of the place. Kinder, in fact, has some things in common to the Botanical Gardens in that both are areas of land dedicated to 'nature' and both are surrounded by densely populated urban environments. It is simply a question of scale.
He continued: "Both areas too have been the subject of a dream come true - Kinder with the dreams of the right to roam and the Botanical Gardens the re-creation of a beautiful gem within the city."

Cllr Gill Furniss, Cabinet Member for Development, Environment and Leisure at Sheffield City Council said: "I am delighted we are hosting this interesting and colourful exhibition here about a place that so may Sheffield people will have visited. The small gallery space in Gatehouse has an intimacy about it that I think people will like and the exhibition is proving popular to those walking through the Gardens."

A lot of the work for the exhibition uses variations of the Boxing Glove Stones on Kinder Scout. Paul has also taken casts of hikers' boot prints from the area.
Paul Goodrick is an environmental artist and sculptor, born and brought up in Scarborough, now based in Maidstone. 'A Kinder Dream' is on show at the Botanical Gardens, Sheffield .

The Botanical Gardens recently attracted 18,000 people at Easter to see the newly restored glass pavilions. This was the completion of the penultimate phase of the Gardens' nearly £7 million Heritage Lottery funded restoration. The restored Pavilions are open from 11am-5pm every day. The Botanical Gardens are open in summer from 8am-7.45 pm during the week and 10am-7.45pm at weekends.
